The origin of the name Estrada

Estrada is an ancient Spanish habitational noble surname derived from estrada (meaning "paved road" or "causeway," from Latin strata). Originating in the manorial village of Estrada in Val de San Vicente (Santander, Cantabria), the lineage traces back to medieval knightly commanders who guarded key mountain passes during the Reconquista. The House of Estrada established major seats across Asturias, Castile, and Flanders, contributing royal governors, diplomats, and military leaders.

The symbolism of the Estrada coat of arms

Visually striking, the Estrada coat of arms features a field divided vertically per pale: the left (dexter) section displays a gold field charged with a central black eagle displayed, symbolising high intellect, imperial nobility, and vigilant protection. The right (sinister) section features a deep blue field with diagonal golden bands bearing black ermine spots, representing loyalty, knightly sashes of honour, and judicial purity. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Cantabrian and Castilian nobility rolls during the Middle Ages and formally registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Doña María de Estrada (c. 1475–1548): Famed Spanish soldier and conqueror who fought during the Conquest of Mexico.
Diego Duque de Estrada (1589–1647): Spanish soldier, diplomat, traveler, and writer of the Golden Age.
Álvaro Estrada (17th Century): Castilian magistrate and royal administrator in Flanders.
