Ellis is an ancient Anglo-Norman and Welsh patronymic surname derived from Elias (from the Hebrew personal name Eliyahu, meaning "My God is Yahweh"). Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest, families bearing the Ellis surname established early manorial estates across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and Flintshire. Recorded extensively in early feudal administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (William Elys) and 14th-century Welsh land inquisitions.
