The origin of the name Elliot
Elliot (Eliott / Elliott) is an iconic Scottish Border clan surname (Clan Elliot) and Anglo-Scottish name derived from the medieval personal name Elias or Eliot. Establishing their ancestral seats in Liddesdale and Roxburghshire along the Scottish Marches during the 14th century, the Elliots played formidable roles as Border Reivers, defending clan lands against cross-border raids. Codified in early Scottish charters, the family held major strongholds including Hermitage Castle and Redheugh.
The symbolism of the Elliot coat of arms
Commanding and protective, the Elliot coat of arms features a red shield charged with a golden-bordered blue diagonal band (bend), set within an engrailed argent / silver or white border (bordure) charged with eight blue escallop shells. In heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial valour and fortitude, while the blue diagonal band represents knightly sashes of honour. The engrailed silver border and escallop shells denote architectural defense, historic pilgrimage, and unyielding faith under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a raised arm holding a curved scimitar sword aloft. Below, the motto scroll displays Fortiter et recte, translating to "Boldly and rightly." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (1672) and documented in Stodart's Scottish Arms.
