The origin of the name Edwards
Edwards is an ancient Welsh and English patronymic surname meaning "son of Edward" (derived from the Old English personal name Eadweard, composed of ead, meaning "prosperity" or "blessing," and weard, meaning "guard" or "protector"). Highly prominent across North Wales (Denbighshire, Flintshire) and Western England (Shropshire, Cheshire), families bearing the Edwards name established influential manorial seats throughout the Middle Ages. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Shropshire (William Edward) and medieval Welsh land surveys.
