The origin of the name Duncan

Duncan is an ancient Scottish patronymic surname derived from the Gaelic personal name Donnchadh (from donn, meaning "brown/noble," and cath, meaning "warrior"). Intimately linked to early Scottish royal history, the name was borne by Kings of Alba including King Duncan I. Clan Duncan (Clann Donnchaidh) established early seats across Perthshire, Angus, and Fife, recorded in early charters and the 1296 Ragman Rolls.

The symbolism of the Duncan coat of arms

Visually rich, the Duncan coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad golden chevron bearing three silver buckles, set between two silver cinquefoils in chief and a silver hunting horn tied with a blue ribbon in base. In classical heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial valour, while the golden chevron and silver buckles denote knightly fidelity and structural unity. The silver cinquefoils represent peace and hope, while the hunting horn signifies forest lordship and watchfulness. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a Scottish galley (lymphad) with oars in action. Below, the motto scroll displays Disce pati, translating to "Learn to suffer/endure." Catalogued in Stodart's Scottish Arms and Burke's General Armory.
