The origin of the name Donovan

Donovan (O'Donovan) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Donnabháin, stemming from donn (meaning "brown-haired" or "noble") and dubh (meaning "dark"). The Ó Donnabháin sept held royal chieftainships in County Limerick (Bruree) before relocating to West Cork, where they ruled as Lords of Clancahill along the River Ilen. Renowned for their fierce independence and military valour, the family was documented extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters and early land surveys.

The symbolism of the Donovan coat of arms

Commanding and martial, the Donovan coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a raised hand grasping an upright sword impaling a green serpent. In Gaelic heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield denotes sincerity and peace, while the upright sword represents justice, truth, and defense of clan lands. The green serpent symbolises wisdom, renewal, and triumph over adversity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a falcon standing atop a red cap of maintenance. Below, the motto scroll displays Vir super hostem, translating to "A man above his enemy." Documented in Edward MacLysaght’s Irish Families.
