The origin of the name Dold

Dold is an ancient Germanic surname originating from Alemannic and Swabian roots in southwest Germany and Switzerland. Derived either from the Middle High German tolder (meaning "treetop" or "summit") or as a patronymic form of Berthold, the name was assumed by families residing on prominent elevated hilltops or manorial woodland seats. Recorded early in the parish registers of Baden-Württemberg, the Black Forest region, and Zurich.

The symbolism of the Dold coat of arms

Visually balanced, the Dold coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad red diagonal band (bend) bearing three silver roses. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the red diagonal band denotes martial valour and noble defense. The three silver roses represent purity, joy, and divine grace. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays red and white feather plumes. Catalogued in German and Swiss armorial registers, including J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Johannes Dold (15th Century): Swabian cleric and record keeper in Freiburg recorded in medieval municipal rolls.
Katharina Dold (17th Century): Recorded landowner and benefactor in the Black Forest region of Baden.
