The origin of the name Dolan

Dolan (O'Dolan) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Dúláin or Ó Docholláin, stemming from dubh, meaning "black" or "dark." The sept held ancestral territories across Connacht (County Galway and County Roscommon) and Ulster (County Fermanagh and Cavan), serving as clan leaders, churchmen, and landholders. Recorded in early Gaelic annals, 17th-century hearth money rolls, and the 1659 Census of Ireland.

The symbolism of the Dolan coat of arms

Elegantly balanced, the Dolan coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three golden crescent moons in vertical alignment, flanked by two argent / silver or white roundels (plates) in chief. In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield represents loyalty and truth, while the golden crescents symbolise enlightenment, hope, and ancestral renewal. The silver roundels denote generosity and peace. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red crescent moon. Below, the motto scroll displays Virtute et fidelis, translating to "By virtue and fidelity." Documented in Edward MacLysaght’s Irish Families.

Historical figures

Cormac Ó Dúláin (15th Century): Gaelic scholar and cleric recorded in Irish annals.
Daniel Dolan (1685–1755): Prominent Roscommon landholder and Jacobite supporter.
Mary Dolan (c. 1820–1890): Community matriarch and leader during 19th-century Irish land movements.
