The origin of the name Dixon

Dixon (Dickson) is an ancient English and Scottish patronymic surname meaning "son of Dick" (a medieval diminutive of Richard). Originating along the Anglo-Scottish border in Northumberland and the Lowlands, Clan Dixon played prominent roles as Border Reivers, defending ancestral lands along the Marches. Codified in early administrative charters, the name appears in the 1332 Subsidy Rolls of Cumberland and 15th-century Scottish land grants.

The symbolism of the Dixon coat of arms

Commanding and martial, the Dixon coat of arms features a green shield charged with an upright argent / silver or white sword set between three silver five-pointed stars (mullets). In classical heraldry, the green shield symbolises vitality, hope, and connection to the land, while the silver sword represents justice, truth, and military defense. The three silver stars denote divine illumination and noble aspiration. Positioned above the shield, the crest features a green wild boar walking above a golden fleur-de-lis. Below, the motto scroll displays Fortes fortuna juvat, translating to "Fortune favours the brave." Catalogued in Stodart's Scottish Arms and Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

Nicholas Dixon (d. 1448): Baron of the Exchequer and Archdeacon of Rochester.
Sir Robert Dixon (1585–1655): Mayor of Dublin and prominent magistrate in Ireland.
Jeremiah Dixon (1733–1779): Famed English surveyor and astronomer who surveyed the Mason-Dixon Line in North America.
