Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Digby

Digby is an ancient English noble and locational surname derived from the parish of Digby in Lincolnshire (from Old Norse dík, ditch or dike, and býr, farmstead or settlement). The House of Digby established prominent seats at Tilton in Leicestershire and Sherborne Castle in Dorset, rising to high aristocracy as Earls of Bristol and Barons Digby. Recorded in early feudal rolls, including the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire.

The symbolism of the Digby coat of arms

Visually pure and elegant, the Digby coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a large argent / silver or white fleur-de-lis. In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty, truth, and steadfast devotion, while the silver fleur-de-lis represents purity, grace, and chivalric honour. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing ostrich holding a golden horseshoe in its beak, an emblem of strength and digestion of adversity. Below, the motto scroll displays Deo non fortuna, translating to "From God, not fortune." Documented in Burke's General Armory (1884).
