The origin of the name Diaz

Diaz (and its direct variant Diez) is an ancient Spanish patronymic noble surname derived from the personal name Diego or Diago (from Latin Didacus, meaning "taught" or "instructed"). Originating during the early Middle Ages in the kingdoms of Castile, León, and Asturias, the lineage is closely tied to Spain's foundational heroic era, most famously represented by Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar ("El Cid"). The House of Díaz established prominent noble seats across northern Spain, serving as Grandees, military commanders, and royal governors.
