The origin of the name DePoar
DePoar (historically rendered de la Poer and modernized as Power) is a major Anglo-Norman magnate surname in Ireland. Arriving in 1177 when Robert de la Poer was granted the lordship of Waterford by King Henry II, the family built great strongholds across Munster. Over centuries, the Barons le Power and Curraghmore played a central role in Irish political and military history.
The symbolism of the DePoar coat of arms
The DePoar coat of arms features a sable (black) and argent (silver) shield divided per fess dancetty (a sharp zigzag line). Sable denotes constancy and solemn resolve, while argent signifies peace and purity. The crest displays a stag’s head bearing a golden cross between its antlers, reflecting faith and divine protection, anchored by the family motto Per crucem ad coronam ("Through the cross to the crown").
