The origin of the name Dennis

Dennis (Denny / Dennison) is a historic surname of dual Anglo-Norman and Gaelic Irish origin. In Britain, it derives from the Old French personal name Denis (from Saint Denis, patron saint of France). In Ireland, it served as an Anglicised form of Mac Donnchaidh (son of Donnchadh). The family established early manorial seats in Devon, Gloucestershire, and County Waterford, recorded in early administrative rolls such as the 1273 Hundred Rolls of England.

The symbolism of the Dennis coat of arms

Visually striking, the Dennis coat of arms features an argent / silver or white field with black ermine spots, charged with three red battle-axes (halberds). In classical heraldry, the silver field with ermine spots denotes high judicial purity and noble standing, while the three red battle-axes represent martial readiness, strength in duty, and unyielding defense. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays red and white feather plumes. Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884).

Historical figures

Sir Thomas Dennis (c. 1480–1561): High Sheriff of Devon and Privy Councillor to King Henry VIII.
John Dennis (1658–1734): English literary critic, dramatist, and political essayist.
Mary Dennis (c. 1770–1830): Early pioneer and prominent community leader in North America.
