The origin of the name DeLeon
DeLeon (De León) is a world-renowned Spanish surname hailing from the ancient Kingdom of León in northwestern Spain. Derived from the Latin leo (meaning "lion"), the name originated as a habitational designation for families from the royal city and province of León, as well as a royal patronymic associated with Spanish monarchs and chivalric commanders of the Reconquista.
The symbolism of the DeLeon coat of arms
In striking heraldic simplicity, the DeLeon coat of arms displays an argent (silver/white) shield charged with a bold gules (red) crowned lion rampant. In heraldry, argent signifies peace and sincerity, while the red lion rampant represents regal courage, magnanimity, and warrior bravery. The royal crown perched atop the lion emphasizes ancestral sovereign favor and knightly honor. Documented in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
