The origin of the name Day

Day is an ancient English patronymic and occupational surname derived either from the Old English daege (meaning dairy worker or administrator) or from the medieval personal name Dey (a diminutive of David). Established prior to the 1066 Norman Conquest, the family held early manorial seats in Somerset, Sussex, and Norfolk, recorded in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of England (John le Dey).

The symbolism of the Day coat of arms

Visually dynamic, the Day coat of arms features a field divided per chevron in radiant gold and deep blue, charged with three five-pointed stars (mullets) counterchanged (two blue stars in chief, one gold star in base). In heraldry, gold symbolises generosity and elevation of mind, while blue represents loyalty, truth, and devotion to duty. The three five-pointed stars denote divine illumination and noble aspiration. Positioned above the shield, the crest features two clasped hands set between a pair of gold and blue wings, an emblem of steadfast unity and faith. Below, the motto scroll displays Sic itur ad astra, translating to "Thus one journeys to the stars." Documented in Burke's General Armory (1884).
