The origin of the name Daly
Daly (O'Daly) is one of Ireland's most celebrated Gaelic surnames, derived from Ó Dálaigh, stemming from dálach, meaning "councillor" or "frequenter of assemblies." The O'Dalys held unprecedented historical distinction as the hereditary chief poets (Ollamhnamh) to the High Kings and regional royal dynasties across Ireland, including the MacCarthys, O'Neills, and O'Connors. The sept established major branches in Westmeath, Galway, Cork, and Kerry, documented extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters.
The symbolism of the Daly coat of arms
Rich in Gaelic heraldic lore, the Daly shield is divided horizontally (per fess) in argent / silver or white and gold, charged with a central lion rampant in black and red, set between two red open right hands in chief. In classical heraldry, the combination of silver, gold, and red symbolises peace, nobility, and fortitude. The central lion denotes fierce bravery, while the two open hands represent unblemished faith and sincerity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green oak tree set above a running greyhound. Below, the motto scroll displays Laidír agus mír, translating from Irish to "Strong and active." Documented in MacLysaght’s Irish Families.
