The origin of the name D’Alton
D'Alton (and its widespread variant Dalton) is a historic Anglo-Norman surname derived from French de Alton (from the manorial village of Alton or Hauteton). Introduced to Ireland during the 1169 Anglo-Norman invasion by Sir Walter d'Alton, the family established powerful feudal lordships in Westmeath, a region that became known in Irish history as "Dalton's Country." The House of D'Alton built formidable medieval castles, served as High Sheriffs, and was recorded extensively in early Irish land inquisitions and royal rolls.
The symbolism of the D’Alton coat of arms
Visually commanding, the Dalton coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a silver lion rampant, surrounded by five golden fleurs-de-lis. In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty, truth, and devotion, while the central silver lion represents heroic bravery and noble leadership. The golden fleurs-de-lis denote chivalric honor and royal favor. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green dragon (wyvern) with spread wings. Below, the motto scroll displays Tristus et fidelis, translating to "Sad and faithful." Catalogued in Edward MacLysaght’s Irish Families and Burke's General Armory.
