The origin of the name Curtis

Curtis is an ancient Anglo-Norman surname derived from the Old French courteis (from Late Latin curtis), meaning "courteous," "refined," or "well-mannered." Introduced to Britain following the 1066 Norman Conquest, the family established early manorial seats across Warwickshire, Devon, and London. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in the 1130 Pipe Rolls (William Curteis) and the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire.

The symbolism of the Curtis coat of arms

Rich in civic and military symbolism, the Curtis coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad golden indented horizontal band (fess dancetty) set between three golden mural crowns. In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield represents truth, loyalty, and devotion, while the indented golden band denotes military fortitude and architectural defense. The three mural crowns symbolise civic honour, brave defense of fortified cities, and high leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden lion rampant supporting a small blue shield bearing the main armorial elements. Below, the motto scroll displays Velle bene facere, translating to "To wish to do well." Documented in Burke's General Armory (1884).
