The origin of the name Curran
Curran is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Corraoin or Ó Curraoin, stemming from corradh, meaning "spear" or "sharp point." The sept held ancestral lands across County Waterford (where they ruled as lords of Machaire Chaisil), County Galway, and County Donegal in Ulster. Renowned for producing scholars, churchmen, and clan leaders, the Currans were documented in early Gaelic annals, the 1659 Census of Ireland, and 17th-century land inquisitions.
The symbolism of the Curran coat of arms
Visually balanced, the Curran coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with three small black shields (escutcheons) in horizontal alignment (in fess). In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and purity of purpose, while the three black escutcheons denote military fortitude, wisdom, and ancestral defense of clan territories.
