The origin of the name Cummings

Cummings (Cumming / Comyn) is a historic Anglo-Norman and Scottish noble surname derived from the town of Comines near Lille in Flanders/Normandy. Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the family moved north to Scotland during the reign of King David I. The House of Comyn rose to immense power, holding the titles Earls of Buchan, Earls of Menteith, and Lords of Badenoch, serving as Guardians of Scotland during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

The symbolism of the Cummings coat of arms

Elegantly agricultural, the Cummings coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three golden sheaves of wheat (garbs). In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield represents truth, loyalty, and devotion to duty, while the three golden sheaves of wheat (garbs) symbolise agricultural wealth, hospitality, and the rewards of hard labour. Positioned above the shield, the crest features a golden lion rampant holding a silver sword aloft, an emblem of heroic bravery and military defense. Below, the motto scroll displays Courage. Catalogued in Stodart's Scottish Arms and Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

John 'Red' Comyn / Cumming (d. 1306): Lord of Badenoch, Guardian of Scotland and rival to Robert the Bruce.
