Whether it’s a gift to celebrate a milestone birthday, a wedding or a housewarming—this piece is an instant heirloom.

The origin of the name Cullen

Cullen is an ancient Gaelic Irish and Scottish surname. In Ireland, it derives from Ó Cuilinn or Mac Cuilinn, stemming from cuileann, meaning "holly tree." The principal sept held ancestral lands in County Kildare, County Wicklow, and County Cork, serving as clan chiefs and church leaders. In Scotland, Cullen arose as a habitational name from Cullen in Banffshire. Recorded early in Gaelic annals and the 1659 Census of Ireland.

The symbolism of the Cullen coat of arms

Visually distinctive, the Cullen coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white chevron bearing a red sheaf of wheat (garb) set between two green shamrocks. The chevron sits between three upright argent / silver or white open right hands. In heraldry, the red shield symbolises fortitude and valour, while the chevron denotes structural protection. The open silver hands represent sincerity and unblemished trust, while the sheaf of wheat and shamrocks symbolise agrarian abundance and Gaelic heritage. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a sea-mermaid holding a golden mirror and comb. Below, the motto scroll displays Non sibi, translating to "Not for oneself." Catalogued in MacLysaght’s Irish Families.
