The origin of the name Cruz

Cruz (de la Cruz) is an ancient Spanish and Portuguese topographic and religious surname derived from the word cruz (from Latin crux, cross). Originally assumed by families residing near a roadside shrine or cross, or born on a major religious holy day, the surname established noble seats across Castile, Andalusia, Galicia, and Portugal during the Middle Ages. Codified early in Iberian armorials, the name spread extensively throughout the Hispanic world and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Cruz coat of arms

Commanding and rich in symbolism, the Cruz coat of arms features a radiant gold inner shield charged with a central red cross flory set above a green serpent's head in base. The shield is enclosed within a broad red border (bordure) charged with eight golden six-pointed stars (mullets). In Iberian heraldry, the gold shield symbolises generosity and elevation of mind, while the central red cross denotes faith and heroic sacrifice. The green serpent represents wisdom and renewal, while the red border and gold stars symbolise divine guidance and knightly service. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays red and gold feather plumes. Recorded in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
