The origin of the name Crawford

Crawford is a distinguished Scottish habitational surname derived from the barony of Crawford in upper Lanarkshire. Originating from the Gaelic Cruadh-Phort or Old English craw-ford (meaning "ford of the crows"), the family traces its recorded lineage to Galfridus de Crawford in the late 12th century. The family established historical seats at Loudoun Castle in Ayrshire and Kilbirnie, famously intermarrying with the royal House of Stewart and serving as High Sheriffs, Barons, and Earls of Crawford.

The symbolism of the Crawford coat of arms

The Crawford coat of arms displays a clean gules (red) shield charged with a prominent gules and argent (silver) fess chequy. In classical heraldry, gules signifies warrior fortitude and magnanimity, while argent represents peace and sincerity.

The central fess chequy (checkerboard band) represents architectural harmony, strategic wisdom, and noble administrative trust granted by the Crown.

Framed by red and silver mantling, the crest features a stag's head erased proper, anchored by the clan motto Tutum te robore reddam ("I will render thee safe by my strength"). Officially recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (Court of the Lord Lyon).

Historical figures

Thomas Crawford of Jordanhill (1530–1603): Celebrated Scottish military commander who captured Dumbarton Castle for King James VI in 1571.

Ada Crawford (1886–1964): Prominent Scottish educational pioneer and advocate for women's higher education.
