The origin of the name Craig

Craig is an ancient Scottish topographic surname derived from the Gaelic creag, meaning "crag," "rock," or "steep cliff." Assumed by families residing near prominent rocky outcrops or manorial crags, the surname established early seats across Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, and the Lowlands. Codified in early Scottish charters, the name appears in the 1296 Ragman Rolls of Scotland (John de Creg) and 14th-century royal land grants.

The symbolism of the Craig coat of arms

Visually striking, the Craig coat of arms features an argent / silver or white field with black ermine spots, overlaid by a broad black horizontal band (fess) bearing three argent / silver or white crescent moons. In heraldry, the ermine field symbolises high judicial purity and noble heritage, while the black horizontal band represents resolve and dignity. The three silver crescents denote enlightenment, hope, and high status. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an armored knight on horseback holding a spear and shield. Below, the motto scroll displays Vive Deo et Vives, translating to "Live for God and you shall live." Catalogued in Stodart's Scottish Arms and Burke's General Armory.

Sir Thomas Craig of Riccarton (1538–1608): Celebrated Scottish feudal lawyer and jurist.
