The origin of the name Coughlin

Coughlin is an established Anglicised spelling variant of the Gaelic Irish surname Ó Cochláin (derived from cochall, meaning "hooded cowl" or "cloak"). Originating in County Offaly and County Cork, the sept produced notable clan chiefs, church leaders, and scholars throughout medieval Irish history. Recorded in early Gaelic parish rolls, 17th-century hearth money rolls, and Irish land grants.

The symbolism of the Coughlin coat of arms

Commanding and regal, the Coughlin coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with three walking red lions (passant) in vertical alignment, each wearing a golden crown. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the three crowned red lions represent royal bravery, heroism, and noble leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays red and white feather plumes. Below, the motto scroll displays Fortis in arduis, translating to "Brave in difficulties." Documented in MacLysaght’s Irish Families.

Historical figures

Gearóid Ó Cochláin (15th Century): Chieftain of Delvin MacCoghlan recorded in medieval Gaelic annals.
Sir Terence Coghlan / Coughlan (c. 1590–1665): High Sheriff of King's County (Offaly) and Member of Parliament.
Charles Coghlan / Coughlin (1703–1783): Irish scholar and prominent landholder in Leinster.
