The origin of the name Coughlan
Coughlan (MacCoghlan / O'Coughlan) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Cochláin, stemming from cochall, meaning "cloak" or "hooded cowl." The principal sept held the ancient territory of Delvin MacCoghlan in County Offaly (King's County), serving as powerful Gaelic lords along the River Shannon. A distinct Munster branch established seats in County Cork. Recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters, the 1659 Census of Ireland, and medieval land inquisitions.

Commanding and regal, the Coughlan coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with three walking red lions (passant) in vertical alignment, each wearing a golden crown. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the three crowned red lions represent royal bravery, heroism, and noble leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays red and white feather plumes. Below, the motto scroll displays Fortis in arduis, translating to "Brave in difficulties."
