Whether it’s a gift to celebrate a milestone birthday, a wedding or a housewarming—this piece is an instant heirloom.

The origin of the name Costello

Costello is a historic Irish surname derived from Mac Coisdealbhaigh ("son of Coisdealbh," meaning "resembling a foot/statue"). The family descended directly from Gilbert de Nangle (Jocelyn de Nangle), an Anglo-Norman knight who accompanied Strongbow during the 1169 invasion of Ireland. Settling in County Mayo and County Roscommon, the family was historic for being the very first Anglo-Norman family in Ireland to adopt a Gaelic Mac surname. The barony of Costello in County Mayo preserves their ancient territory.

The symbolism of the Costello coat of arms

Elegantly balanced, the Costello coat of arms features a radiant gold shield charged with three deep blue lozenges (diamonds). In classical heraldry, the gold shield symbolises generosity, nobility, and high standing, while the deep blue lozenges represent wisdom, constancy, and unyielding faith under trial. Positioned above a traditional steel helmet, the crest features a golden falcon standing with spread wings, holding an upright sword in its claw. Documented in Edward MacLysaght’s Irish Families and Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

Gilbert de Nangle / Mac Coisdealbhaigh (12th Century): Anglo-Norman knight who established the Costello dynasty in Connacht.
General Arthur Costello (1680–1742): Irish military officer who served with distinction in the French Brigade of Wild Geese.
John A. Costello (1891–1976): Famed Irish barrister and statesman who served as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland and formally declared Ireland a republic in 1949.
