The origin of the name Cortez

Cortez is an established spelling variant of the noble Iberian surname Cortes, derived from corte (court or tribunal). Widely recorded throughout Spain, Portugal, and the Americas, the lineage traces to medieval feudal houses in Aragon, Navarre, and Castile. Families bearing the Cortez spelling established influential seats in commerce, governance, and military command across the Hispanic world.

The symbolism of the Cortez coat of arms

Rich in Spanish tradition, the Cortez coat of arms displays a gold shield charged with vertical red stripes (paly of gold and red), enclosed within a deep blue border (bordure) charged with eight argent / silver or white crosses flory. In Spanish heraldry, the vertical gold and red stripes represent royal Aragonese allegiance, chivalry, and courage. The blue border and silver crosses symbolise truth, loyalty, and Christian devotion under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays red and gold feather plumes.
