The origin of the name Cortes

Cortes is an ancient Spanish and Catalan noble surname derived from corte (court or tribunal) or as a habitational name from various settlements named Cortés in Aragon, Navarre, and Castile. Originating during the early Middle Ages, the noble Cortes family established prominent seats in Zaragoza, Teruel, and Extremadura, contributing distinguished military commanders, scholars, and royal diplomats to Iberian history.

The symbolism of the Cortes coat of arms

Rich in Spanish tradition, the Cortes coat of arms displays a gold shield charged with vertical red stripes (paly of gold and red), enclosed within a deep blue border (bordure) charged with eight argent / silver or white crosses flory. In Spanish heraldry, the vertical gold and red stripes represent royal Aragonese allegiance, chivalry, and courage. The blue border and silver crosses symbolise truth, loyalty, and Christian devotion under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays red and gold feather plumes. Recorded in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
