The origin of the name Corcoran
Corcoran is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Corcráin, stemming from corcair, meaning "purple" or "ruddy-faced." The sept held ancestral seats across County Tipperary, County Offaly, and County Fermanagh, serving as hereditary ecclesiastics, scholars, and landholders in medieval Leinster and Munster. Recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters, the 1659 Census of Ireland, and early parish records, the Corcorans maintained strong Gaelic ties throughout Irish history.
The symbolism of the Corcoran coat of arms
Commanding and martial, the Corcoran coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with two red lions combatant supporting an upright argent / silver or white sword. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the two red lions combatant represent heroic courage, noble rivalry, and high bravery. The upright sword denotes justice, truth, and defense of faith and homeland. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden hawk perched atop an oak stump.
