The origin of the name Corbett

Corbett (Corbet) is a distinguished Anglo-Norman noble surname derived from the Old French corbet (a diminutive of corbin, meaning "raven"). Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest by Roger Corbet, the family received vast feudal baronies in Shropshire along the Welsh Marches. The House of Corbet built powerful medieval fortresses, including Caus Castle, and played major military and administrative roles across Shropshire, Cheshire, and the Scottish Borders.

The symbolism of the Corbett coat of arms

Visually iconic, the Corbett coat of arms features a radiant gold shield charged with a standing black raven (corbie). In classical heraldry, the gold shield symbolises generosity, nobility, and high standing, while the black raven is an ancient canting symbol representing keen intelligence, watchfulness, and prophetic foresight. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays black and gold feather plumes. Below, the motto scroll displays Deus pascit corvos, translating to "God feeds the ravens." Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884).
