The origin of the name Cooper
Cooper is an ancient English occupational surname derived from the Middle English couper (from Middle Dutch kuper, tub or cask maker). Master coopers were essential trade craftsmen in medieval society, manufacturing wooden barrels, casks, and vats required for shipping, brewing, winemaking, and food preservation. The Cooper Guilds held extensive commercial influence across London and provincial market towns. Codified early in feudal records, the surname appears in the 1176 Pipe Rolls of Surrey (Robert le Cuper) and the 1273 Hundred Rolls.
The symbolism of the Cooper coat of arms
Commanding and noble, the Cooper coat of arms features a black shield charged with an argent / silver or white chevron bearing blue ermine spots, set between three golden lions rampant. In heraldry, the black shield symbolises wisdom, dignity, and constancy, while the ermine-spotted chevron denotes high judicial integrity and protection. The three golden lions represent supreme bravery, heroism, and noble leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest features a golden lion rampant holding a battle-axe. Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Cooper of Sussex and London.
