The origin of the name Cook

Cook is an ancient English and Scottish occupational surname derived from the Old English coc (from Latin coquus), referring to a master cook or chief culinary administrator of a manorial or royal household. Highly respected within medieval society, master cooks held major responsibilities within noble guild trade corporations and civic administration. The surname was codified following the 1066 Norman Conquest, appearing in the 1185 Pipe Rolls of Essex (Galfridus le Coc) and the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire.

The symbolism of the Cook coat of arms

Visually striking, the Cook coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white horizontal band (fess) bearing a red fleur-de-lis set between two red crescents, positioned between three silver wolves' or dogs' heads erased in golden crowns. In heraldry, the deep blue shield denotes loyalty and truth, while the horizontal band and red fleur-de-lis represent military honour and chivalry. The red crescents symbolise enlightenment, and the silver wolves' heads denote fierce watchfulness and courage. Positioned above the shield, the crest features blue and white feather plumes. Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884).
