The origin of the name Contreras

Contreras is an ancient Spanish habitational noble surname originating from the town of Contreras in the province of Burgos, Castile. Derived from the Latin contra and eras (meaning "opposite fields" or "surrounding lands"), the surname was first assumed during the 10th century by feudal knights of Castile. The House of Contreras rose to high aristocratic rank during the Reconquista, holding extensive manorial fiefs, serving as royal governors, and contributing leading figures to Spanish governance and transatlantic exploration.

Visually commanding, the Contreras coat of arms features a central shield displaying vertical blue and argent / silver or white stripes (paly of six azure and argent), enclosed by a broad red border (bordure) charged with eight golden saltire crosses.
