Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Connolly

Connolly is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Conghaile, stemming from cu (hound) and gal (valour), meaning "fierce warrior." The family established three major historical branches: in County Monaghan (where they were lords of Oirghialla), in County Galway, and in West Cork. Renowned in Gaelic history for producing scholars, political reformers, and military leaders, the Connollys were documented extensively in early Irish annals and the 1659 Census of Ireland.

The symbolism of the Connolly coat of arms

Visually striking, the Connolly coat of arms features a black shield charged with five argent / silver or white escallop shells framed within an engrailed argent / silver or white scalloped inner border. In classical heraldry, the black shield symbolises wisdom, dignity, and constancy under trial, while the argent / silver or white escallop shells are traditional emblems of pilgrimage, steadfast faith, and honourable service across distant lands. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an arm in armor holding a golden wreath. Below, the motto scroll displays the French phrase En Dieu est tous, translating to "In God is all." Documented in MacLysaght’s Irish Families.
