The origin of the name Coleman

Coleman is an ancient surname with dual English occupational and Gaelic Irish roots. In England, it derives from the Old English personal name Colman or the occupational term for a charcoal burner or gatherer. In Ireland, it serves as the Anglicised form of Ó Colmáin (derived from colum, meaning "dove," in honour of Saint Columba). The Irish sept held ancestral lands across Munster (County Cork and County Tipperary) and Connacht (County Sligo), recorded in early Gaelic annals, the 1273 Hundred Rolls of England, and the 1659 Census of Ireland.

The symbolism of the Coleman coat of arms

Visually striking, the Coleman coat of arms features a shield divided horizontally (per fess) in argent / silver or white and black, charged with a central cross flory counterchanged set between four four-pointed stars (mullets). In heraldry, the contrast between argent / silver or white and black symbolises peace, truth, wisdom, and constancy under trial. The central cross denotes steadfast faith, while the four stars represent divine illumination and noble guidance. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver horse's head erased, an emblem of courage and swiftness. Below, the motto scroll displays Sis justus et ne timeas, translating to "Be just and fear not." Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884).
