The Coen Family Crest mug. Beautifully illustrated. Carefully researched. Uniquely personal.

Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Coen

Coen is a historic surname of dual Gaelic Irish and European origin. In Ireland, it serves as an Anglicised form of the Connacht surname Ó Cuaich (meaning "cuckoo") or Mac Eoin (son of John), centered in County Galway and County Mayo. In continental Europe, Coen also developed as a Dutch and Germanic personal and family name derived from Conrad (meaning "bold counsel") or as a variant of the Hebrew priestly name Cohen.

The symbolism of the Coen coat of arms

Refined and distinctive, the Coen coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield with black ermine spots, overlaid by a broad deep blue diagonal band (bend) bearing an argent / silver or white dove standing between two silver arrowheads (pheons). In heraldry, the argent / silver or white field with ermine spots denotes high judicial purity and noble lineage, while the deep blue band symbolises truth and loyalty. The dove represents peace and divine grace, while the arrowheads denote swift readiness. Positioned above the shield, the crest features a green sea-horse holding a green lozenge charged with a silver fleur-de-lis.

Historical figures

Joel & Ethan Coen (The Coen Brothers): Four-time Academy Award-winning American filmmakers famous for classic films like Fargo and No Country for Old Men.
Jan Pieterszoon Coen (1587–1629): Dutch East India Company officer who served as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.
Franklin Coen (1912–1990): American screenwriter nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
