The origin of the name Clare

Clare is an ancient Anglo-Norman noble and habitational surname derived either from the manorial estate of Clare in Suffolk, England, or from Clere in Normandy. Arriving in Britain with William the Conqueror during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the mighty House of Clare became Earls of Pembroke, Gloucester, and Hertford. Richard de Clare, known as "Strongbow," led the 1169 Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland, granting the family massive estates across England, Wales, and Ireland (giving name to County Clare).

The symbolism of the Clare coat of arms

Visually iconic, the Clare coat of arms features a radiant gold shield charged with three bold red chevrons. In classical heraldry, the gold shield symbolises generosity, nobility, and high standing, while the three red chevrons represent architectural strength, military defense, and unyielding fortitude under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays vibrant red and gold feather plumes. This legendary armorial layout is officially catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) and early medieval European rolls of arms.
