The symbolism of the Five Keys in the Chaves escudo de armas/coat of arms

More than just a striking design, this crest embodies the remarkable history of the Chávez family’s ascent to nobility. Rooted in historical tradition, the legend begins during the Siege of 1160, when two courageous brothers, Garci and Rui Lopes, assembled a private army to reclaim the heavily fortified border town of Chaves from Moorish control. The five keys prominently displayed on the shield represent the keys to the five main gates of the captured fortress, serving as a lasting tribute to the strategic valor that secured the city’s freedom.

In recognition of their extraordinary bravery, the King of Portugal bestowed upon the brothers the surname Chaves, which translates directly to "Keys".

Within Iberian heraldry, a red border adorned with gold St. Andrew's crosses is a distinguished emblem of honor, frequently commemorating the historic Battle of Baeza in 1227. The small diagonal "X" shaped crosses on the red border are known as saltires, or aspas in Spanish. This specific X-shape is the St. Andrew’s Cross, named after the saint who was martyred on a cross of this form. The five elements are arranged in a unique cross-like pattern that mirrors the royal Portuguese seal.

This illustrious lineage later extended into Trujillo, situated in the Castile and Extremadura regions of Spain. It eventually became the principal ancestral branch from which the majority of Chávez families across the Americas descend today.
