Celebrate your family heritage with a gift to cherish – the Chavez Family Crest framed and printed on museum-quality matte paper. Beautifully illustrated. Carefully researched. Uniquely personal.
It represents an ancient, distinct branch of the Chavez family that settled within the kingdoms of Castile and Galicia. In Spanish heraldry, records are kept a bit differently than in British or French traditions. Instead of a shield being granted exclusively to one specific individual and passed strictly to an oldest son, Spanish armorials—like the Repertorio de Blasones—register shields to entire linajes (lineages or branches).
This distinguished Chavez coat of arms is a formally documented, court-certified Castilian variant with an illustrious royal lineage. This exact shield is officially preserved in the masterwork of Spanish heraldry, the Repertorio de Blasones de la Comunidad Hispánica, compiled by Vicente de Cadenas y Vicent, the historic King of Arms (Cronista de Armas) for the Spanish Ministry of Justice and appears in the Certificaciones de Armas (Certificates of Nobility) filed between the 16th and 19th centuries.
A notable figure linked to this Chavez family branch was Alonso de Chaves, the ’Imperial Mapmaker’ (c. 1495 – 1587). He was one of the most brilliant scientific minds of the Spanish Renaissance and a monumental figure in the Age of Discovery. Operating from the secretive Casa de la Contratación (House of Trade) in Seville under the Crown of Castile, he served as the Piloto Mayor (Chief Pilot) and Royal Cosmographer for both Emperor Charles V and King Philip II. As the ultimate gatekeeper of the New World, Chaves was entrusted with maintaining the Padrón Real—the highly classified, master world map that every Spanish sea captain was legally required to copy before charting a course across the Atlantic. His legacy beautifully embodies the intellectual, scientific, and maritime mastery of the Castilian heartland, making him a proud historical anchor for the Chávez family name.
