The origin of the name Chandler
Chandler is an ancient English occupational surname derived from the Old French chandelur (from Latin candelarius, candle maker), identifying a master maker or merchant of wax candles and lamps. Highly important to medieval civic life, manorial illumination, and religious ceremonies, chandlers held powerful positions within London trade guilds. The surname was recorded following the Norman Conquest, appearing in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of London (Reginald le Chaundeler).
The symbolism of the Chandler coat of arms
Rich in geometric order, the Chandler coat of arms features a checkered shield (chequy) in deep blue and argent / silver or white, charged with a broad black diagonal band (bend) bearing three golden lions walking. In classical heraldry, the checkered pattern symbolises civic structure, balance, and stewardship, while the black diagonal band denotes wisdom and resolve. The three golden lions represent heroic leadership and bravery. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a pelican feeding her young in her nest. Documented in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Chandler of London and Hampshire.
