The origin of the name Chambers
Chambers is an ancient English and Scottish occupational and official surname derived from the Old French chambre (from Latin camera, room or vault). In medieval manorial households and royal courts, the name identified an officer in charge of a lord's private chambers, treasury, or administrative records. Codified following the 1066 Norman Conquest, the surname established early seats in Yorkshire, Cumberland, and Lanarkshire, appearing in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Nicholas de la Chambre).
The symbolism of the Chambers coat of arms
Elegantly proportioned, the Chambers coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad red horizontal band (fess), set between a red lion emerging in chief and a red fleur-de-lis in base. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield denotes peace and sincerity, while the red horizontal band represents military fortitude and defense. The red lion symbolises noble courage, and the fleur-de-lis denotes chivalric honour. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden eagle standing with spread wings. Below, the motto scroll displays Spero, translating to "I hope." Documented in Burke's General Armory (1884).
