The origin of the name Cavanaugh
Cavanaugh is an established Anglicised spelling variant of the Gaelic Irish surname Caomhánach, meaning "a follower of Saint Caomhán." The sept descended directly from Domhnall Caomhánach, son of Diarmait Mac Murchada (12th-century King of Leinster). The MacMurrough Kavanaghs held the hereditary Kingdom of Leinster for centuries, ruling vast ancestral territories in County Carlow and County Wexford. Recorded extensively in Gaelic annals and medieval land charters, the family remains one of Ireland's most famous royal clans.
The symbolism of the Cavanaugh coat of arms
Commanding and noble, the Cavanaugh coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a walking red lion (passant) set above two red crescents. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the red lion represents noble bravery, leadership, and heroic fortitude. The two red crescents denote enlightenment, hope, and ancestral renewal. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden sheaf of wheat (garb) rising from a red crescent. Below, the motto scroll displays Síocháin agus fairsinge, translating from Irish to "Peace and plenty." Documented in Edward MacLysaght’s Irish Families.
