The origin of the name Castro

Castro is an ancient Spanish and Portuguese habitational surname derived from the Latin castrum, meaning "fort," "castle," or "fortified settlement." Originating during the early Middle Ages in the kingdoms of Galicia, Castile, and Portugal, the noble House of Castro was one of the most powerful aristocratic dynasties in Iberian history. The family held vast feudal domains, served as Grandees of Spain and Dukes of Lemos, and played major roles in royal governance and transatlantic exploration.

Distinctive and elegant, the Castro coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with six deep blue roundels (hurts) arranged in two vertical rows of three.
