The origin of the name Castillo

Castillo is a historic Spanish and Iberian habitational surname derived from the word castillo (from Latin castellum, castle or fortress), referring to a family residing near or holding command of a manorial fortress. Originating in Santander, Castile, and Navarre during the early Middle Ages, the noble Castillo family established prominent ancestral seats across Spain, Italy, and the Americas, playing major roles in Spanish royal governance and naval command.

The symbolism of the Castillo coat of arms

Richly detailed, the Castillo coat of arms features a vertically divided shield (per pale): the left red section displays an argent / silver or white triple-towered castle, while the right argent / silver or white section features a green oak tree with a serpent coiled around its trunk. In Spanish heraldry, the red section and argent / silver or white castle symbolise martial valour, architectural defense, and noble protection. The right section with the green oak tree and serpent denotes ancient endurance, deep roots, wisdom, and renewal. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays red and white feather plumes. Documented in the Nobiliario Español and Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Bernal Díaz del Castillo (1492–1584): Spanish conquistador and historian who authored The True History of the Conquest of New Spain.
Pedro Castillo (b. 1969): Peruvian educator and politician who served as President of Peru.
Otto René Castillo (1936–1967): Celebrated Guatemalan poet, intellectual, and revolutionary figure.
