The origin of the name Casey
Casey is a honored Gaelic surname derived from Ó Cathasaigh, meaning "descendant of Cathasach" (signifying "watchful" or "vigilant"). Six distinct septs established historic territories across Ireland, most notably in Dublin (the kingdom of Bregia), Limerick, Fermanagh, and Mayo. As with many native lineages, political pressures and anglicization led many families to omit the O' prefix during the 17th to 19th centuries, surviving today as both Casey and Casey.
The symbolism of the Casey coat of arms
The coat of arms features an argent (silver) shield charged with a gules (red) chevron set between three red falcons' or eagles' heads erased. In heraldry, argent denotes peace and purity, while gules represents warrior fortitude and magnanimity.
The heraldic chevron symbolizes architectural protection and faithful service, while the three falcons' heads erased embody keen vision, swift action, and strategic foresight.
Emerging above the shield from a cloud, the crest depicts a dexter hand holding a golden garb (sheaf of wheat), representing agricultural abundance and divine blessing. The golden ribbon bears the Latin motto Per varios casus ("Through various fortunes"). Cataloged in Burke’s General Armory.
