The origin of the name Carton

Carton is a historic surname of dual Gaelic Irish and Anglo-Norman origin, derived either from Mac Artáin (son of Artán, meaning "little bear") or locationally from the manorial estate of Carton in County Kildare. The sept held ancestral lands across County Wexford, County Kildare, and County Down, serving as scholars, civic officers, and landholders. The name was recorded in early medieval Irish inquisitions, the 1659 Census of Ireland, and 17th-century land grants.

The symbolism of the Carton coat of arms

Visually striking, the Carton shield is divided horizontally: the upper argent / silver or white section features a central red crescent set between two upright red open right hands; the lower green section displays a golden lion rampant. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white section symbolises purity and sincerity, while the open red hands denote unblemished faith, courage, and trust. The red crescent represents enlightenment and hope, while the green lower section and golden lion reflect Gaelic land heritage and noble bravery. Below, the motto scroll displays Buailím sé, translating from Irish to "I strike it." Documented in MacLysaght’s Irish Families.

Historical figures

Sir William Carton (1831–1896): Prominent Irish jurist, magistrate, and High Sheriff of County Dublin.
Victor Carton (1902–1970): Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Senator in Seanad Éireann.
