The origin of the name Carroll

Carroll is an ancient Irish Gaelic surname derived from Ó Cearbhaill, signifying "descendant of Cearbhall" (a personal name meaning "courageous in battle"). The primary sept constituted the sovereign princes of Ely O'Carroll, ruling extensive lands across Offaly and Tipperary, alongside distinct branches in Kerry, Leitrim, and Louth. During periods of British administration and transatlantic emigration, the O' prefix was commonly dropped, accounting for both Carroll and Carroll spellings today.

The symbolism of the Carroll coat of arms

The coat of arms features a sable (black) shield charged with two or (gold) lions rampant combatant supporting a erect argent (silver) sword. In heraldry, sable symbolizes constancy and noble resolve, while gold denotes generosity and elevated mind.

The two combatant lions represent fierce bravery and unity in protection, while the central silver sword erect signifies unyielding justice and defense of sovereign lands.

Positioned above the shield from a golden coronet, the crest displays a golden hawk with wings elevated resting upon an oak stump, holding a silver sword erect in its right claw. The motto scroll bears the Latin In fide et in bello fortis ("Strong in faith and in war"). Registered in the Office of Ulster King of Arms.
