The origin of the name Carrillo

Carrillo is an ancient Spanish noble surname originating in the Kingdom of Castile during the Middle Ages. Derived from the Spanish word carrillo (meaning cheek or small cart), the name was first assumed by feudal knights in Cantabria and Burgos. The House of Carrillo rose to immense aristocratic prominence, holding the titles Counts of Priego and Marquesses of Caracena while serving as Grandees of Spain, royal ministers, and high prelates.

The symbolism of the Carrillo coat of arms

Visually commanding, the Carrillo coat of arms features a vibrant red shield charged with a central argent / silver or white triple-towered castle (alcázar). In Spanish heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial valour, heroic fortitude, and magnanimity, while the argent / silver or white triple-towered castle represents architectural strength, noble lineage, and steadfast protection of kingdom and faith. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays gold and red feather plumes. Catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
