The origin of the name Carr

Carr is an ancient Northern English and Scottish Border surname of Anglo-Norse origin, derived from the Old Norse kjarr, referring to a family residing near a prominent marsh, wetland, or overgrown brushwood meadow. Taking deep root along the Anglo-Scottish Border in Northumberland, Roxburghshire, and Yorkshire, the Carrs became a formidable Border Reiver clan holding powerful strongholds at Ford Castle and Cessford. The name was recorded in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Yorkshire (John de la Ker).

The symbolism of the Carr coat of arms
